What Makes Your Cancer Different?

 The question is – Is My Cancer Different?  Well first of all as my readers know I don’t have cancer, but I am however a cancer fighter.  I started my fight against pancreatic cancer about 15 months ago after losing a close family friend to the disease.  Since then I have been actively seeking a cure by fundraising and raising awareness of pancreatic cancer.  Here is what is different about pancreatic cancer.

1.  It is the 4^th largest cancer killer

2.  Of the major cancer killers it has the lowest survival rate at 6%.

3.  Unfortunately pancreatic cancer receives the lowest amount of government funding of research out of all the major cancers.  Here are some graphs to demonstrate this inequity.

The point of this new website www.ismycancerdifferent.com is not really how pancreatic cancer is different than breast cancer or lung cancer. It is about raising cancer patients awareness that there are most likely differences on a molecular level between two people who are battling the same cancer. It is important for patients and doctors both to realize that each patient should be receiving an individualized treatment plan based on the type of cancer they have, and also the way it is presenting to them as an individual. I don’t pretend to be an expert on cancer, only one who wishes to defeat it in every way. What I do pretend to understand something about is common sense, and my common sense tells me that every cancer patient needs to be looked at from a molecular standpoint and have a tailor made treatment plan built for them based on their own particular situation. Nemo is dead...Oh Well!

     Hey everyone!  It has been a while since I have written a blog post.  I have been busy training for the 2nd Annual Karen Petty Memorial Double Century Bike Ride Against Pancreatic Cancer.  The ride is over.  We completed the 200 mile trek last Saturday in 14 hours, and have raised almost $15,000 for the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network to date and we still have donations rolling in.  Now that I have a little more time to spend out of the saddle I will be devoting more time to my blog.  I have literally lived and breathed the bike for the past 6 weeks, and it is nice to finally have a little breather, although I plan on keeping up my riding...I have to do something to combat the gut that is still hanging under my shirt!

     Well enough about me.  Tonight my 8 year old daughter Ailey lost her second fish in her aquarium to some unknown disease, or perhaps old age I guess.  She dutifully takes care of this tank every day, and it literally looks as clean as the day she got it.  I have been waiting for one of the little guys to kick off since she got the thing.  I thought she would be upset when they died, but I was surprised by how matter of fact she is about their deaths.  "Hey dad there is a dead fish in my tank."  That was it.  No drama at all.  I wonder how many kids are like her and how many aren't?  She is really just a matter of fact little booger, and she is tough as nails.  I fished the sucker out with a spoon and flushed him down the toilet in typical fish burial style.  Ailey didn't even attend the funeral!  Just snuggled up in her bed and called out for me to get her some water.  I love all of my kids for many reasons, but when it comes to being rock hard I can always count on Ailey to hang tough.  For that I believe she deserves a fresh fish from the fish store!

Wacky Dad Makes The News For Pancreatic Cancer Fight!

I don't have a lot of time to make a post, but I wanted my readers to know that we are making strides toward ending pancreatic cancer.  They put my dumb butt on the nightly news today to help publicize the ride I am doing in honor of mr friend Karen Petty who passed away last year from pancreatic cancer.  Here is the news segment on

Pancreatic Cancer Is Commiting Genocide Upon Our Nation

     We are 2 weeks away from riding the 2nd Annual Karen Petty Pancreatic Cancer Double Century Bike Ride. I have been training my butt off since I have 2 keep up with my 2 hotshot partners this year, Greg Anderson and Tyler Dewitt, and also to earn every donation that I receive for the ride. I also think it is important for me to perform as well as I can to honor my Friend Karen the way that she should be. That isn't by an out of shape fat boy limping his way up to New Hampshire! I will be prepared to fight pancreatic cancer in my own fashion every mile of the 200 in front of me.
      While riding 100 miles today I had 6 hours to think about pancreatic cancer. It is amazing how much bile the thought of pancreatic cancer brings from my belly. I've decided that pancreatic cancer is no different than the dictators throughout the world who routinely perform acts of genocide on their people. In the last 10 years pancreatic cancer has killed 400,000 of my countrymen and countrywomen who are predisposed to contracting this cancer. This is not acceptable. A 6% survival rate is embarrasing, and we can't stand by and keep the status quo. If this kind of atrocity was the result of a rogue nation killing its citizens then we would fully mobilize our armed forces and we would be kicking ass and taking names to the tune of billions of dollars. But in pancreatic cancer's case we let this silent dictator go on killing our friends and family and we fund it's fight quite meagerly. This is dead wrong.
     I would like to ask you to stand with me against this scourge, this killer of our citizens and many more, and kick ass and take names the way Americans should when we are under attack. Why should we allow a piss ant disease to kill our friends, family and fellow humans. It is just wrong. I want to mobilize an army of Rhode Islanders and Americans to fight this disease fist to fist and beat it into oblivion. I for one am not going to stop until I find pancreatic cancer lying dead on the street like a brutal dictator deserves. Join me in my fight. You can start by supporting my bike ride this year. Movie Review - Game Time: Tackling the Past

Well it has been a tough week for my home state Rhode Island due to the wind damage from tropical storm Irene.  We lost power at my house Sunday morning at 6:30 and it just got restored tonight.  We are still awaiting our internet restoration which might just have been worse than living without the electricity!  It has definitely been tough keeping up with my blog during the outage.  I have written several reviews for the P&G Family Movie Night and didn't want to miss out on this review, so I decided to stay late at the office and watch the latest movie from the Family Movie Night team - Game Time: Tackling the Past. As usual they have delivered another excellent movie.

The backbone of the movie revolves around football, and I believe that anyone who enjoys the game and the camaraderie it takes to make a successful team would enjoy this flick.  Also it is a valuable movie for kids and adults alike on the subject of reconciliation between family members and friends.  When it comes to team work and family this movie really hits the mark.  Catherine Hicks and Beau Bridges were my two favorite actors in this movie, but the cast was strong overall.  Game Time: Tackling the Past is on Saturday, September 3 on NBC at 8pm ET/7pm CT. You can also check out the Facebook discussion about this movie at http://www.facebook.com/familymovienight.
