"Welcome to Franconia Notch State Park, located in the heart of the popular White Mountain National Forest. Franconia Notch is a spectacular mountain pass traversed by a unique parkway which extends from the Flume Gorge at the south to Echo Lake at the north. For eight miles, I-93 winds between the high peaks of the Kinsman and Franconia mountain ranges. Download the Franconia Notch State Park Hiking Map.

Franconia Notch was the home of the famous Old Man of the Mountain, the same "Great Stone Face" immortalized by Nathaniel Hawthorne and Daniel Webster. While you are here, stop at the Flume Gorge Visitor Center and walk through the renowned Flume Gorge, ride the exciting aerial tramway at Cannon Mountain, and visit the New England Ski Museum. Take your time, stop for a swim at Echo Lake, net a trout while fly fishing at Profile Lake, ride your bike on the Recreational Trail, watch for rock climbers, hawks, and falcons on Cannon Cliffs, or hike on the Appalachian Trail. Bring the family, stay awhile, and enjoy Franconia Notch State Park."

  1. You and your family should buy a nice little hospital in Franconia and move up there.

Otherwise, I have to agree with you about Cannon. Overall, you just can't beat Cannon.

Are all the injuries you talk about your own little way of keeping lift lines nil?

  2. You know I always have a plan! No really I am all for cannon succeeding as much as possible! This is a hill for real skiers though. No pansies allowed!

  3. Is this where you discovered the range of the little walkie-talkies?

  4. There's a story Bill. That was at Ragged Mountain.

Eric and I bought these little FRS radios, walkie talkie thingies. Problem is there are only a few channels and families often have to share a channel.

We used them on the mountain so we could find each other, and we'd use them in our cars on the way home so we could communicate. This was before cell phones were so popular.

Well, there's this little girl and her dad who happen to be on "our" channel and every 3 minutes the dad would ask,

    "Amy, where are you?"

and little Amy would reply, "I'm in the Barnyard" (a flat little area of the mountain popular with young kids and novice skiers).

All day long we're hearing, "Amy, where are you? I'm in the Barnyard". Had to be a hundred times. We were bustin a gut about it all day.

At the end of the day we were leaving and I radio Eric in his car in the parking lot, "Eric, where are you"? The meathead answers me, "I'm in the F-C-I-G Barnyard".

Silence for about 20 seconds and then little Amy answers,

    "Daddy, that wasn't me"

We both busted a gut laughing at that one.

Dam, we did that on those radios all the way home from NH to RI.

"Eric, where are you"? "I'm in the F-C-I-G Barnyard".

Thanks Bill, I almost forgot about that.

  5. That was good! I forgot about that!

  6. I remember you telling me that story and I just cracked up, I have told your story many times over the years. Love it.

Jolene and I use the FRS radios when I am driving the mtorhome and she is driving the car, and that dand story pops right into my head. Where are you Jolene? She never gets it, I crack up...
